Frequently asked questions.

The Boden Fund Frequently Asked Questions

  • A pediatric stroke occurs when there’s a disruption of blood flow to a child’s brain, either before birth (perinatal) or after birth (childhood stroke). It can affect physical movement, cognition, speech, and development. Pediatric stroke affects 1 in 4,000 newborns and 1 in 20,000 children each year in the U.S.

  • In babies and young children, signs can be subtle — including seizures, weakness on one side, or developmental delays. In older children, symptoms may include sudden weakness, trouble speaking, or severe headache. Always seek medical attention if you suspect a stroke.

  • Causes can include heart defects, blood disorders, infections, or unknown factors. Each child’s situation is different, and sometimes no cause is found.

  • Recovery varies widely and may involve physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy, and ongoing medical care. Many children make incredible progress with early intervention and support.
